Blueprint your Projects!
With your goals in mind, let’s review all of the projects and initiatives you are involved in. Blueprint organizes your projects strategically, so you are able to focus on what makes sense and refocus on what will give you the best results.
What is Blueprinting
In simple words, Blueprint is a consulting session where we sit down to review all your projects, to-do lists, initiatives and pending items so you can refocus your work and purposely move towards your most important goals.
Why Blueprint your Projects
If you don’t have a clear picture of where you want to go with your projects, you will be lost trying to reconcile your efforts with what you are trying to achieve. Blueprinting your work will help you regain strategic focus on what really matters to you, your team and your organization.
Rebooting will help you answer some important questions:
- Which projects are really important?
- Where should I be spending time in my projects?
- What is still unclear in my projects?
- What projects and initiatives should I stop investing effort in?”
Blueprinting helps you take control of your work. By reviewing your project portfolio, you will have a more strategic vision of your work and be able to make decisions on how to move forward, to have a better sense of direction
Blueprinting helps you refocus on the initiatives that will give you the best results. It will improve your state of mind and help you identify opportunities to improve your results.
The Blueprinting Process – How it Works
We start with a single Blueprinting session to organize your project work. As needed, we can hold additional sessions to review and improve your project portfolio.
Blueprinting sessions are usually in the morning, when everyone has a clear mind and can think strategically. As we progress through the session, you can invite your project team to help you clarify some project issues. The goal at the end of the session is to have something in your hands you can take ownership of and present to other project stakeholders.
During the Blueprinting process we may find a series of open issues that can be immediately resolved. That will help you identify gaps in your planning, so you can either resolve them or ask senior management the tough questions.
Blueprinting is an opportunity for you to go to a higher peak to see all your projects, work and initiatives from a different perspective. It will give you insights on what is or isn’t working in your project planning process.
Every engagement may be slightly different. Here is an illustrative example of how it works:
Before we start, if you haven’t already done so, I strongly encourage you to have a Reboot Session with me. Having your personal and professional goals clear in mind will immensely help your project decisions move forward.
Most likely, we will begin by collecting a series of documents, project plans, to-do lists and outstanding items.
Then, we will probably do a brain dump of everything that is on your plate as a manager. We try to capture as much as we can of what you have on your mind and is keeping you up at night.
Next, we will try to group these items into categories and identify what can be done, delegated, postponed and discarded.
We can also identify some milestones and conflicts between the projects you are executing.
Finally, as we go over a few iterations, we will start to uncover some patterns, so we can address them.
The process is nothing more than trying to elucidate and uncover cross-project issues, resurfacing anything that was relevant but forgotten during your day-to-day activities. I have a number of techniques I can use to help achieve that.
Our goal at the end of the session is to simplify your project management activities, either by grouping items or by refocusing your efforts.
